8485 and Danny Brown Deliver New It-Girl Anthem With “G.I.R.L.”
The Girl Scouts might have you believe G.I.R.L. stands for “Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, and Leader” (eyeroll), but 8485 and Danny Brown are rebranding the acronym to mean “Good In Real Life” with their new single collab, “G.I.R.L.”
If this is the first you’re hearing of 8485, let the track’s opening line, “You want to meet me in real life,” be her bold and fitting introduction to you. In an era where social media rules our lives, 8485’s it-girl declaration has us asking, “What IS so good in real life?” The artist’s first single of the year is a self-celebritized anthem reminiscent of a time when flip phones and iPod Nanos were all the rage.
The song’s hyperpop, glitch-core, experimental elements are a direct reflection of 8485’s early aughts online persona (her website is something out of a 2000s internet cafe). The track’s production, courtesy of doin’ fine, feels like switchboard-style analog sounds run through a hyper-digitized sonic pixelator. Overtop, 8485’s sung-spoken delivery is full of attitude, building as the song progresses and teeing up for Danny Brown’s feature, which kicks the song into overdrive at just the right moment.
Brown is not one to shy away from curiously idiosyncratic crossovers, and his verse on this track is the exemplar of his uncanny ability to jump on any tune and deliver an iconic and apposite performance.
