Cybertrash Reinvents Himself With Two New Genre-Blurring Singles

When Tolkien sat down to write The Return of the King in 1955, I don’t think he expected today to ever happen. For this week, our king and hyperpop favorite Cybertrash returns with two long-awaited new singles, “play pretend” and “REDEYE (demo).” It’s been almost a year since we last heard from the young musical prodigy but today our hero returns with two new bangers to turn fans old and new on their heads. “play pretend” and “REDEYE (demo)” are the newest (and first) indie-rock tracks from Cybertrash, potentially signaling the beginning of a new sonic era for the artist. Who’s to say — but with plans to release “heavily” throughout the remainder of 2022, we’d be wise to tune into Cybertrash now more than ever.

Okay, okay, it might be an exaggeration to designate “play pretend” and “REDEYE (demo)” as pure indie rock, but to be fair, the 12 months that have passed since his last release seem to have had quite the impact on Cybertrash. In “play pretend,” Cybertrash’s high-energy percussion and finely-tuned vocal performance find an unlikely pairing with bright guitar melodies previously unexplored by the once-hyperpop darling. The track later evolves with the introduction of thundering and distorted bass signals and glitchy vocals that lead listeners into the next track. “REDEYE (demo)” may fit more closely with an indie-pop name tag, but like the track that preceded it, it’s made unique by Cybertrash’s own futuristic touch. Featuring production from DvDx, Juberlee, Glyph, Cybertrash, and YAKI, our king has truly assembled the avengers for “REDEYE (demo),”  a banger that simultaneously pays homage to hyperpop’s past while moving the genre further with refreshing originality.

With more releases planned for the remainder of 2022, all there is to do is 1. Keep “play pretend” and “REDEYE (demo)” on repeat and 2. Speculate what genres Cybertrash is planning on playing with next. Will we finally get our first hyperpop country song? Perhaps an ambient vaporwave bop with Cybertrash production? How long will we have to wait before Cybertrash puts his own mix over Tibetian chants? The questions are many but the answers are unknown, and sometimes the hardest battles are fought with patience alone. Whether you’re a new fan or a day one stan, Cybertrash is certainly an artist to watch as summer starts to heat up.
